The four scenarios

Who controls frontier AI capability, and whether society can still tell what's true. The naive read collapses them — few hands means controlled truth, many hands means chaos — but they're orthogonal. The honest geometry is a tilted plane, not a balanced grid: synthetic fog is the low-energy state across three of the four corners, because the same capability that mass-produces synthetic media is the best tool for detecting it — so access topology decides who controls both the fog machine and the only working flashlight.

What scales is not truth but the price of being believed. When frontier verification sits in a few hands, "verifiable" quietly means "verified by them" — credential access becomes the bottleneck, not facts, and provenance becomes a toll road. Authenticated reality splits into a premium signed channel and a vast ambient tier assumed fake by default; the poor live in the ambient one. This is also the only corner where shared reality is cheaply maintained — concentration is precisely what makes provenance enforceable — but that maintenance must be governed into existence as plural, contestable public infrastructure, not assumed.

The equilibrium is neither chaos nor clarity but a permanent attention tax: authentication must win every time while forgery needs to win only once, so maintaining shared reality is a cost every participant pays continuously. The tools work; people stop using them. Verification fatigue, not deception, is the real failure mode — the corner drains silently toward fog whenever checking becomes one friction too many. The redemption is an interface problem: bake default-on provenance into capture devices, and you get shared reality with no custodian to capture.

The fog is not a side effect but a moat: the chokepoint actor navigates a world they have made unnavigable for everyone else, keeping a private clear channel while the public layer degrades. No censorship fingerprint needed — flood the zone until dissent is indistinguishable from synthetic noise. The population experiences not oppression but confusion, and confusion doesn't organise resistance. That is what makes this the most under-walked corner: stable, deniable, and invisible from inside. The thin redemption is structural — unlike the symmetric fog of the proliferated corner, the lever to de-fog exists and its location is known.

The Abandoned Square

The failure isn't that lies win — it's that a shared public fact stops being economically viable. Institutions that need shared facts don't loudly collapse; they quietly delaminate into private, trust-gated enclaves. The public square isn't burned down; it's abandoned. One off-diagonal surprise: at full saturation forgery loses its power, because nobody trusted the unverified channel anyway — the danger is the transition, not the end-state. The deeper tax is coordination friction: every transaction that used to run on cheap public trust now needs its own ritual, making the economy slower and more local, permanently.

How this whole reading could be wrong

What would undo the pair's thesis — not any single corner.

The lead reading rests on verification-cost asymmetry: forging is generative — one success suffices — while verifying must win every time, so the grid tilts toward fog as the low-energy state. That breaks if hardware-rooted authentication becomes default-on at the point of capture: a camera that signs every artifact before it leaves the device costs nothing to verify and collapses the asymmetry entirely. A second falsifier: if fog saturation arrives fast enough that the unverified channel is fully discounted before institutions depend on it, forgery defuses itself before the disaster framing predicts.
