The redeeming dream — no more fraud, no fakes, everything traceable — produces a quieter cost: once every claim, credential, and contribution is logged and scored, trying on a false self and failing privately becomes economically irrational, so the version of you that experiments and reinvents has nowhere to hide. Broad ownership of the rails doesn't guarantee broad control of what counts as verified, either — whoever defines the provenance schema and the dispute-resolution court of last resort holds a soft chokepoint the egalitarian cap table never touches. With the material rails shared and the facts settled, the scarce resource left to fight over is meaning itself, and politics migrates into ferocious, near-theological disputes over taste and worth.

The unsettling finding here is that working truth infrastructure doesn't threaten concentrated ownership, it stabilizes it: a few owners who can actually prove they're keeping their promises produce something the usual vocabulary has no name for — a legitimate feudalism, verifiable enough that domination reads as good service rather than deception. Because you can't argue with a lord the facts are genuinely on the side of, the only remaining freedom is exit, so encryption and the refusal to be provenance-tracked become the era's political dissent rather than a privacy footnote. And because the record of you is perfectly accurate, mobility dies not from prejudice but from precision — the system knows exactly who you are and prices you accordingly, forever.

Shared ownership of an unverifiable machine doesn't restrain the fog, it accelerates it: every co-owner is incentivized to flood the shared channel with reality favorable to their stake, and because they're a co-owner nobody can be expelled — a tragedy of the commons run in reverse, by overproduction instead of overgrazing. The strange result is a re-localization of trust inside the most advanced civilization yet: when no infrastructure verifies anything, verification reverts to bodies and proximity, and guild-like reputation networks and in-person credentialing quietly return. Into the vacuum steps whoever prices risk anyway — insurers become the de facto arbiters of what's real enough to bet on, inheriting the authority courts and journalism lost.

The redeeming twist is that total fog blinds the powerful before it blinds anyone else: when owners can no longer verify their own surveillance data, their own loyalty metrics, their own subordinates, capture turns brittle and paranoid rather than secure — courts of intrigue and purges based on unverifiable suspicion are power eating itself, not power consolidating. Because everything can be faked, provably real experience becomes the one status good money can't manufacture, so live performance, witnessed making, and physical presence stage an unlikely renaissance inside the worst-case corner. The fog even becomes a moat the owners can't dismantle if they wanted to — having weaponized synthetic reality to capture the rails, clearing it would re-legitimize every challenger buried underneath it.
