When direct assurance of a system is weak, institutions substitute whatever proxy is available — a benchmark, a provenance seal, an insurer's price — and quietly stop asking whether the system is safe, only whether it's still certifiable.

The four scenarios

Two questions: whether society still has a usable, shared account of what's real, and whether AI systems themselves can be inspected, bounded, and corrected. The obvious pairing treats them as one axis — either both hold or both fail together — but the two mismatched corners are the ones that matter: a legible world governing an unreadable machine, and a readable machine laundering an illegible world.

Clean Machines, Dirty Air

The intuition that 'alignment solved' should help with fog is only half right: a corrigible system can be logged, audited, and patched, and every one of those logs will show it behaved properly — inside a world of staged inputs and forged provenance it had no way to question. Bad actors come to prefer the auditable system for exactly this reason: 'the model followed procedure' becomes the shield for a poisoned premise, and because the system patches fast, institutions can quietly retune what counts as true after every scandal, producing a moving boundary of 'truth' that's easy to audit and nearly impossible for an outsider to track.

Good records and a genuinely correctable system reinforce each other, which is exactly what makes this corner slower than it looks: the audit trail itself becomes scarce civic infrastructure, and institutions start queuing around it the way courts queue around expert testimony, so 'can the AI do it' stops being the question and 'which evidence chain is allowed to certify it did it safely' takes over. Rollback becomes political memory too — because deployments can actually be reversed, every reversal sets a precedent, and the hard fights migrate from whether something failed to whether an incident is even allowed to count as one.

The Unattributable Accident

The distinguishing failure here isn't that harm happens, it's that nobody can agree on why: with a fogged information environment and a system too opaque to inspect, there's no way to tell an accident from an attack from a forged record from an ordinary bug, so compensation, liability, and reform all stall on a dispute over causation that never resolves. What fills the vacuum is privatized epistemics — firms, cities, even households building sealed trust enclaves of vetted sensors, agents, and human witnesses — because trust stops being something you have and becomes somewhere you have to go.

The Calibrated Oracle

This is the corner that passes for responsible AI governance without solving what governance is supposed to solve: society keeps its facts, keeps measuring outcomes, and simply accepts that the system producing them can't be opened up — trusted the way a weather forecast is trusted, calibrated until conditions change. Whoever writes the benchmark ends up writing the constitution for what 'safe' means, since the scorecard is the only handle anyone has on the box, and insurers and procurement offices become the de facto safety regulator, not because they understand the system, but because they've priced its observed failure rate.
